The latest in the ongoing saga of President Donald Trump’s alleged “fake news” accusation: Trump’s claim that the Democratic National Committee is a “fraud” that “destroyed” the 2016 presidential election.
The claim comes amid a broader investigation into the allegations of Russian interference in the election and alleged ties between Trump associates and Russia, including the alleged firing of former FBI Director James Comey.
On Sunday, Trump’s lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, issued a statement denying the allegation that the DNC was “a fraudulent entity,” according to a transcript of the interview obtained by The Washington Post.
“President Trump’s false claim about the DNC is utterly ridiculous,” Kasowitz said in the statement.
“The DNC was never in any way involved in the Clinton campaign or the 2016 election, and the Democrats have been clear about this since the election.
The DNC is not a ‘fraud’ for making the DNC into a fake news organization.”
Kasowitz also claimed that the president “has made up a story about the Democrats that is demonstrably false.”
In the interview, Kasowitz discussed the ongoing probe into Russia’s interference in American elections.
Trump’s claim comes amidst a broader probe into the accusations of Russian involvement in the 2016 campaign and alleged links between Trump associate and Russia.
According to the Washington Post, the DNC has been in the news for months now for a variety of reasons.
The organization was hit with a massive hack and leak in August, which led to the resignation of chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
The DNC and the Clinton Foundation have both been under scrutiny in recent months as the investigation into Russian interference and possible ties to the Trump campaign continues.
The report also said that the Trump team has a “pattern of misleading or misleading Congress and the public about Russia’s efforts to influence the 2016 elections, which has included false and misleading statements about Russian involvement.”
